On 28th March,
Highland Education
Development Organisation (HEDO) held the seminar “Support development
of Education, Science and Health and Poverty Alleviation in upland
and ethnic minority areas” on the occasion of foundation day.
Present at the meeting are Mr. Do Nguyen Phuong - Minister of
Health; Professor and Doctor Pham Minh Hac - Vice Chairman of
Central Science and Education Committee; Professor and Doctor
Nguyen Van Hieu - Chairman of Scientific Council (National Centre
for Natural Science and Technology), and a number of scientists,
directors of education, health and science.
After a number of same workshops
held in Northern mountainous provinces, this workshop is organised
to discuss, exchange experience and identify effective methods
to promote development of education, health, science and poverty
alleviation in poor and disadvantageous areas. As this non-governmental
organisation was founded to call on support from domestic and
international organisations, HEDO has established relationship
with nearly 100 Government agencies, non-governmental organisations,
research institutes and universities of 45 countries, mobilised
and cooperate to implement 73 projects which worth 22 billion
VND during the past 10 years. Besides, the organisation supports
to train scientists and management staffs of mountainous areas.
Many foreign experts voluntarily come to teach Vietnamese students
and officers. Thousands of teachers are trained to become village
health worker. Agricultural researchers and engineers provide
technical training to farmers at the invitation of HEDO.
In 2000, HEDO has a number of on-going projects
such as poverty alleviation; population and family planning; school
and clinic building; drug abuse prevention; environment; preservation
of culture and ethnic minority languages.
