It is with great pleasure that I invite you to submit nominations for
the prestigious United Nations Vienna Society Award, which honours
individuals and/or organisations who have distinguished themselves
by making outstanding contributions to the fight against drug abuse,
crime and terrorism.
The annual UN Vienna Society Award pays tribute to the prominent and
supportive role of the host country of Austria and the City of Vienna
in promoting the work of the United Nations, especially in light
of the UN’s emphasis on strengthening outreach and partnerships
with all segments of civil society.
In honouring these individuals or organization, the United Nations
Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention hopes to encourage
them to continue their work and to inspire others to join the global
coalition dedicated to fostering justice and social progress.

United Nations Vienna Civil
Society Award
We invite you to nominate
individuals or groups who you believe deserve to be considered for
the 2002 UN Vienna Civil Society Award.
No candidate may nominate
himself or herself.
THE AWARD
Vienna has been a United
Nations headquarter city for two decades, hosting several UN programmes.
The annual UN Vienna Civil Society Award pays tribute to the prominent
and supportive role of the host country of Austria and the City
of Vienna in promoting the work of the United Nations, especially
in light of the UN's emphasis on strengthening outreach and partnerships
with all segments of civil society.
The award highlights the
important work of the United Nations in promoting civil society
by recognizing outstanding contributions by civil society in fighting
drug abuse, crime and terrorism and fostering justice and social
progress.
The Award consists of a medal,
certificate and annual prize money of $100,000. If there is more
than one recipient, the prize money is shared.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Eligibility:
The prize is awarded to individuals
and/or organizations who have made outstanding contributions in
promoting civil society, particularly in the areas of fighting drug
abuse, crime and terrorism, thereby fostering justice and social
progress.
Nominees will be considered
on an annual basis. A nomination form and updated description of
achievements are required every year.
Award Selection Committee:
The Award Selection Committee
will consist of the Director-General of the United Nations Office
at Vienna and Executive Director of the Office for Drug Control
and Crime Prevention, an appointed representative of the Government
of Austria and the Mayor and Governor of Vienna, as well as up to
five eminent personalities from civil society.
NOMINATION PROCEDURES
Governments, international
organizations, civil entities or individuals may nominate individuals
or organizations for the UN Vienna Civil Society Award by completing
the nomination form and providing the requested information. Only
nominations which provide all the information requested on the nomination
form will be considered valid.
DEADLINE FOR NOMINATION
Completed nomination forms
and required information must reach the ODCCP External Relations
Unit before 30 June 2002.

3. Achievements of Nominee
A) Summarize briefly the
main reason why the nominee should be considered for the award.
B) Attach a supporting statement
(minimum 500 words) that provides the details of the nominee's contributions
to the promotion of civil society, particularly in the areas of
fighting drug abuse, crime and terrorism. The information provided
should explain:

why the contributions
are considered valuable;
·
the short-
and long-term impact of these contributions;
·
the approximate
number and type of beneficiaries affected by these contributions;
and
·
how the contributions
were accomplished by the nominee, with due recognition being given
to any significant role played by others.
